Fine Finishings - Beautiful on the Inside

What does it mean when I serge the seams or all raw edges are finished? It means I use a 4 thread stitch that creates the seam between fabrics as well as encases the raw edges of the fabric. This creates a nicely finished interior to the garment. More importantly, it keeps the fabric edges from fraying. Your handmade garment will last for years and years. Even if your child outgrows it, you know the item will last for years to come as you pass it on, resell it, or hold on to it for future children. I have dresses I made more than 10 years ago that have been worn by 3 girls on a regular basis. They are holding together strong, like they did when they were first made!

This is the underside of a skirt where the ruffle meets the main skirt piece. The raw edges are serged. Once serged, the seam was pressed and topstitched (see picture under topstitching to see the end result).
